Melvin Reed, Sr. was born December 5, 1946 in Glen Allen, Mississippi to the late Willie Reed, Sr. and Annie Laura Stanford Reed.  He confessed his love for Christ at an early age and joined the St. Peter Church in Mayersville, MS.  Later he joined the St.Peter East Church in Greenville, MS under the leadership of Rev. H.C. Hagler.

Melvin was educated at Glen Allen School.  He was employed by Comet Rice, Utility Products, and Boeing.  He was also a licensed HVAC man.  Melvin was a family man, hardworking, and honest man.

April 18, 1985, Melvin married his longtime friend and the love of his life Delois McGee.

On the morning of August 19, 2020, Melvin joined his parents; his son, Michael Reed; brothers, Willie Jr. and Arthur Reed; sisters, Lutisha Reed, Julia Pearl Johnson and Mary Kelly.

Melvin leaves to cherish his memories: his loving and devoted wife, Delois Reed, Greenville, MS; seven (7) loving children: Melvin Reed Jr., Detroit, MI, Kenneth Reed, Atlanta, GA, Kendell (Melanie) Reed, Charlotte, N.C., Stedmon Tolliver, Jackson, MS, Carl Taylor and Melvin Reed, III both of Greenville, MS, and Latoya (Chad) Smith, Plano, TX; nine (9) siblings, Elder Eugene (Gwen) Reynolds, Pittsburgh, CA, Robert Lee Smith, Mayersville, MS, Jerome (Mary) Reed, Jackson, MS, Emmett Reed, Mayersville, MS, Lorenzo (Vickie) Reed, Marietta, GA, Horace Reed, Greenville, MS; three(3) sisters: Josie (Jerry)Funchess, Colorado Springs, CO, Patricia (Thomas) Bernard, Jackson, MS, and Linda (Allen) Mullins, Little Rock, AR.  He also leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, in-laws, and St. Peter East Church Family.
