Mr. Luther Varnell Campbell was the only child born to the union of John Osborn Campbell and Janie Shegog Campbell. His life began on October 17, 1923 in Glendora, Tallahatchie County, Mississippi. At the age of three his family moved to Mound Bayou, Bolivar County, Mississippi. Mr. Campbell made the most important decision of his life in July 1937 when he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Azion Missionary Baptist Church, Mound Bayou, Mississippi under the leadership of Reverend L.M. McNeal. He remained a member of Azion throughout his life and was honored as the oldest member until his passing. He never left Azion and Azion never left him. His early education was obtained from Campbell College and other private schools of Mound Bayou. He graduated from Mound Bayou High School on May 27, 1943. On October 7, 1943, Mr. Campbell was united in Holy Matrimony to Annyce Mariah Perkins. To this union, nine children were born. One grandchild, Khari K. Butler, was reared in their home. Mr. Campbell and his wife, sought to teach and train their children in the Christian way of life. They were also committed to educating their children to be productive citizens. All of the children attended and obtained a college education. In July of 1943, after receiving his draft letter, Mr. Campbell was inducted into the United States Navy. He served in Okinawa and other areas in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged in 1945. Mr. Campbell continued his service to mankind by obtaining employment with the United States Postal Service and served the Mound Bayou and surrounding communities faithfully for over 34 years. As a returning World War II veteran, he joined Montgomery Green Post #220 of Mound Bayou, Mississippi and remained an active member until his health failed. Mr. Campbell departed this life at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland, Mississippi.
