Obituary

Leon "Doc" Powell, Sr. passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2020 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at the age of 73.  He was a native and long time resident of Greenville, Mississippi.  Mr. Powell, a retired band director, served in many capacities throughout the Delta:  Simmons High School, O'Bannon High School, Humphreys County High School, Gentry High School, Nugent Center and on the collegiate level at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, Kentucky.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Powell; his children:  Angela Powell Jones (Lawrence) and Leon Powell, Jr. (Joyce) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two sisters:  Maxie Franklin (Stacey) of New Orleans, Louisiana and Cynthia Bradley of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren: Dr. Kelvin Jones (Felicia) and Kel'Jun Jones  of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Whitney Higgins Crawford (Justin) of Columbus, Mississippi and Destiny Murray of Atlanta, Georgia; his pride and joy were his two great- grandsons; Dillion Chase and Samuel "BJ" Jones.  He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.

Mr. Powell will be remembered by the positive impact he made in the lives of students he taught and mentored, most of whom regarded him as a father figure.  He was a pillar in the community and his legacy will be remembered forever.  Mr. Leon Powell was Past Master of Delta Fourth Lodge #349, Modern Free and Accepted Masons of the World, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.

Preceding him in death are his parents:  Tommy and Clara Powell; four brothers, David Powell, Tommy Powell, Jr., Curtis Powell and Cloyd Powell; a sister, Abby Lindsey; a brother-in-law, Willie B. Bradley, Jr.

The visitation will be held Friday, April 24, 2020 from 3-5 pm at New Hope Baptist Church located at 705 Nelson Street in Greenville, Mississippi, and a private gravesite burial service on Saturday, April 25, 2020.  Reverend Thomas Mullally, SVD will be officiating the service.
