Joann
Curry
Jul 22, 1952 — Aug 16, 2025
Shaw
On July 22, 1952, a radiant flower bloomed in Boyle, Mississippi, a flower whose beauty, grace, and strength touched the lives of many both near and far. The flower was JoAnn Curry.
Born the fourth child and first daughter to the late A.D. and Inez Anthony Curry, JoAnn, affectionately known as "Ann" by family and friends, lived a life rotted in faith, compassion and resilience. At an early age, she confessed her hope in Christ and was baptized at Poplar Grove Missionary Baptist Church on Sandpit Road in Shaw, Mississippi, a commitment that guided her throughout her journey.
Ann received her education at McEvans School in Shaw, Mississippi. Beyond the classroom, she became an educator of life to her family, imparting wisdom, thoughtfulness, and guidance to those blessed to know her. Her presence was a lesson in kindness, her words often carried the weight of wisdom, and her life itself was a testimony of grace. With her innate sense of style and elegance, Ann left an impression that was inspiring as it was unforgettable.
In the stillness hours on August 16, 2025, our most cherished flower yielded her spirit unto God and entered eternal rest. Though her earthly journey has ended, the fragrance of her love, her laughter, and her legacy will forever linger in the hearts of those she touched.
Ann was preceded in death by her devoted parents, A.D. and Inez Curry; two brothers, Robert Curry and Adell Curry; one sister, Earnestine Curry Johnson; her grandparents, Otila and James Curry, Sr., and George and Victoria Gillespie; and her son-in-law, Melvin Barnes. Her years were filled with love, family, and countless memories that will continue.
JoAnn "Ann" Curry leaves to cherish her memories; two loving children, Dexter (Kimberly) Curry of Louisville, Kentucky and Geneen Curry Barnes of Mound Bayou, Mississippi. Three grandchildren, Meshaliyouna Curry, Antonio Mason and Antonira Mason Sutton of Mound Bayou, MS and three great grandchildren; Carmen Sutton, Avelo Mason and Anthonio Mason, Jr.; Three sisters; Bernice Curry Malcolm (Stephen) of West Henrietta, New York, Marie Curry (John) and sister and best friend, Geneva Curry, both of Shaw, Mississippi. Five brothers; Melvin Curry of Shaw, Mississippi, Ernest Curry and Earl Curry of Pasadena, California, Earl Curry and Harold Curry, both of Shaw, Mississippi and Alvin (Ball'd) Curry of Mound Bayou, Mississippi. A special aunt, Katy Gillespie Townsend of Pasadena, California and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
