Curtis Newsome, Sr. was born January 17, 1948 to Mrs. Priscilla Newsome and the late Mr. Leon Newsome in Scott, MS. Curtis was the fifth of eight children. He fought a good fight and on October 29, 2011, God saw that it was time and whispered "Peace be Thine." Curtis quietly passed into Eternal Rest at 4:00 A.M. Curtis attended Nugent Center Elementary and High School where he was a member of the Ray Brooks Gospel Singers. After graduating from Nugent Center in 1968, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served his country for two years (1969-1971). Upon his return, he met and married Maggie Perkins in 1971 and to this union four children were born. After the dissolution of this marriage, he met Mary Curry-Fulton and they were united in marriage on June 25, 1992. To this union, one son was born. Curtis made preparation for his departure by accepting Christ at an early age and was baptized under the leadership of Rev. J.D. Spraggins at Kindling Altar Baptist Church of Priscilla, MS. He remained associated with Kindling Altar servings as a deacon under the leadership of Rev. Ephen Melton until its merger with Mt. Sanai Baptist Church of Greenville, MS in 1999. He continued to serve as deacon at Mt. Sanai Baptist Church. In 2010, he decided to join with his wife and son and united with the Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church of Shaw, MS under the leadership of Rev. Herron Wilson where he remained faithfully until his death. He will be remembered by his church family for his powerful prayers. Curtis was employed with Supervalu Transportation Department from 1974 until July, 2002. In 2002, he became an owner-operator and was leased to Great Wide Transportation until his death. Curtis was a dedicated worker and loved "Trucking". During his time at Supervalu and throughout his career, his work ethic and loyalty was exemplary. His main focus was safety in which he was presented with an award for outstanding performance in driving "1,000,000 miles" accident-free. He was also skilled in woodworking and enjoyed it at his leisure. Curtis was known for his no-nonsense approach to life ...being firm but fair. He allowed God to work on him and through him. He went through a metamorphosis that reflected God's awesome ability to refine and polish until the product produced is pure gold. He was always willing to help those in need.
