To Honorable Deacon Carl M., Born on January 13, 1958, to the late Mr. Myrtis C. Love and Ms. Ollie B. Lewis in Beulah, Mississippi, Carl was a man who devoted his life to, God, his family, and his community. On August 23, 2025, at the age of 67, he peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord while visiting Urbana, Illinois. From an early age, Carl placed his trust in Christ and confessed his faith at Mt. Mariah M.B. Church, which later became Beulah Community M.B. Church. His love for God reached far beyond the church walls. With a heart full of compassion, Carl touched countless lives offering; wisdom, kindness, and encouragement to everyone he encountered.
He attended Beulah Elementary and graduated from the Rosedale School District, where he excelled as an athlete, playing football and running track. After high school, he continued his education at Mississippi Delta Community College, earning an associate's degree in welding.
On July 3, 1998, Carl was united in holy matrimony with Gwendolyn Vaughn-Lewis. Their 27 years of marriage was rooted in faith, love and unity. Together, they created a warm and welcoming home that extended beyond their own family, embracing anyone in need of love, support, or encouragement.
Carl was a man of many talents and tireless dedication. He worked as a self-employed store owner in Beulah, was known for his eyes, as a gifted photographer, and dedicated more than 40 years to Cives Steel Company, where his hard work and leadership earned him the role of supervisor. His love for his hometown was evident in his service as the Mayor of Beulah for 12 years, where he poured his heart into strengthening and uplifting his community. However, outside of his work and services, Carl also enjoyed life by, spending time with his loved ones, and cheering for his favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys.
He was preceded in death by his father, Myrtis Love; his brothers, Billy Joe Russell and Marvin Foster; and his sister, Linda Foster-Holloway.
He leaves behind cherished memories with his devoted and loving wife, Gwendolyn A. Vaugh-Lewis; his mother, Ollie Bell Lewis; one son Jamarqus(Veronica) Reed; and two grandchildren, Ka'Darrius and Essence Reed. He is also survived by his brothers Charles Lewis of Beulah, Michael (Jackie) Lewis of Rosedale, Steven Lewis of Hyannis, Massachusetts, Oscar (Tamara) Foster of Memphis, TN, Tony (Angela) Pattison, and Gary Wilson of Pattison; and his sisters Veronica Lewis of Beulah, Patrina Miller of Memphis, TN, Gloria (Ronny) Foster of Cleveland, Mamie (Steven) Toliver of Rosedale, Marilyn Leslie-Selmon of Florida, Lawanda Wilson of Pattison, and Sherika Moore, Valerie (Karl) Ellis, Pamela (Terrell) Bruce, Wanda (Bryan) Moore, and Alice (Donald) Byther all of Pattison, MS; One uncle, Four aunts, His mother-in-law, three god children and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church members and friends who will forever cherish his legacy of faith and service.
